    Inspired By Birds in Northumberland

What have you noticed about birds in Northumberland?

Write a poem for Cobourg Present, our evolving eChapbook.

This month you are invited to write a poem about birds. It amazes me the diversity and abundance of birds here in every season. Some days it’s hard to get to the laundry because the cardinals are singing. When I work from home, mourning doves coo outside my windows during my online meetings. The grackles fight over the bird seed and the robins build nests in my eaves.

What is your relationship with birds? How could you capture their personalities and stories in a poem?

This month our poetry focuses on how we observe or relate to the natural world around us throughout any season.

You are also welcome to revisit a prompt from an earlier month and submit a poem at any time. Click here to see the archive of prompts.

    Inspired By Legacy in Northumberland

What influences you or inspires you about Northumberland?

Write a poem for Cobourg Present, our evolving eChapbook.

This month you are invited to write a poem about a local person, place, or project that has impacted you. There are many examples of legacy here. Recently the Cobourg Ecology Garden celebrated its 25th Anniversary. I’ve heard of local businesses that have closed or will soon close that made a big impact on people. We have traditions like prom parades and the Highland Games. There are the love locks by the frink. Memories on the pier. Concerts at the gazebo.

What legacy or tradition catches your attention? Maybe you will write about something from long ago that you wish was still here. Your poem can be about anything connected to legacy, tradition, and influence. Who, what, or where impacts you?

This month our poetry focuses on the things we want to hold onto, the memories and stories we share over time, the way a place can change our lives even in the smallest of ways.

Let’s celebrate the spirit of legacy.

You are also welcome to revisit a prompt from an earlier month and submit a poem at any time. Click here to see the archive of prompts.

    Inspired By Summer in Northumberland

    What inspires you about summertime?

Write a poem for Cobourg Present, our evolving eChapbook.

This month you are invited to write a poem about summer. Let’s show our gratitude for the beach, the lake, the trails for hiking, the marina, the farm fresh produce, the festivals, and the time with family and friends. We are lucky to live in a place that thrives in summertime.

Do you have memories of summer long ago? Are there moments this month you want to capture in a poem? What are your favourite things to do in summer?

Maybe it’s a place you like to visit. Or, something that only blooms in July. How can you capture a glimpse of summer in a poem?

Let’s celebrate the spirit of summertime.

You are also welcome to revisit a prompt from an earlier month and submit a poem at any time. Click here to see the archive of prompts.

    Inspired by our Grandparents

According to the 2016 census the average age of people in Cobourg is 49. The median age is 54. This means a lot of grandparents live here!

Write a poem for Cobourg Present, our evolving eChapbook.

This month you are invited to write a poem about your grandparents. The last year hasn’t been easy and many are looking forward to when they can see grandparents again. Or some people are thinking about the events in history their grandparents lived through and reflecting on how that connects or compares to this.

What do you love most about your grandparents? What do you remember about them? What would you do if you could spend the day with them today?

Maybe you want to write from the perspective of your child self. Maybe your grandparents are gone and you want to capture their legacy in a poem. Was there a lesson they taught you? Start with a photo or a phone call and see where it takes you.

    Let’s celebrate our grandparents.

You are also welcome to revisit a prompt from an earlier month and submit a poem at any time. Click here to see the archive of prompts.

Inspired By Our Food, Farms, and Eateries

When I moved to Cobourg over ten years ago, it was the food that surprised me most. We live in a delicious region!

Write a poem for Cobourg Present, our evolving eChapbook.

This month you are invited to write a poem about food. What inspires you about the food of Cobourg and Northumberland?

Food is central to how we express our culture. Food becomes part of traditions and celebrations. We are lucky to live in a region that is filled with people who are passionate about good food.

Maybe you want to write about a local business or a trip to the Farmer’s Market (which opens in a week!) Or maybe you want to write about a memorable meal shared with friends. Perhaps it’s the beautiful farmland that inspires you or picking apples at one of our local orchards.

Let’s celebrate the most delicious parts of life here!

You are also welcome to revisit a prompt from an earlier month and submit a poem at any time. Click here to see the archive of prompts.
