Secret Club for Kids

A Grade 4 gives me a slip of paper at recess, a ticket to join his “elite” club with 3 of his friends. The rules are no hitting or kicking. When asked if there was a secret handshake he said, “No but we totally need one.”

Kids are often engaged in a push/pull of inclusion and exclusion. The boy who started this group wanted to create a sense of belonging, to feel more connected to his peers. But what happens next?

And how will this look when they are adults?

Are these clubs helpful or harmful?
